How soon can I start the class?
We ask that you have attended a post natal check-up with your GP, most surgeries will offer this from 6 weeks, although some may be slightly later. It is essential that your GP has agreed that it is safe for you to begin exercising. If you have had a caesarean section, you may wish to wait longer but this depends on how you are feeling and how your body is healing.
What kind of sling do I need?
To take part in the class, you will need a full seated baby carrier, sling or wrap, that supports baby in a seated position - not with legs hanging fully down from the hips.
Do I need to own a sling?
Not necessarily, we work in partnership with local along consultants and libraries so we can put you in touch with people who can help you choose the best sling for you and arrange a loan. With notice, we can even arrange the loan for you.
Is it safe for me and my baby?
Developed in partnership with Blue Skies Natural Parenting Centre in Cheltenham, the classes are designed to offer gentle aerobic exercise, stretching and toning for mums - or dads - and their babies aged between 6 weeks to 2 years, or up to the age where parents feel they can support their child's weight in a full seated baby carrier, sling or wrap, and the child is comfortable in this position for the duration of that class. Older toddlers and pre-schoolers are welcome too, and are invited to dance along with mummy or daddy. During the class, if you feel that your baby need extra support or you find any of the movements uncomfortable, the teacher will be able to provide adaptations to help you get the most out of the class.
What if my baby needs a feed or a nappy change during the class?
Please aim to feed your child - and yourself - one hour prior to exercising, however, the classes are informal and relaxed so feel free to tend to your baby's needs as required.
Do I need previous dance or babywearing experience?
No previous dance or baby wearing experience or a particular level of fitness is necessary, all you need is yourself and the best dance partner of all - your child. You will also require a baby carrier, sling or wrap that supports baby in a fully seated position with adequate head support. Free loan of carriers is available for first sessions for anyone without, and each class with start with ensuring babies are comfortable and all slings are safely and securely fitted.
What kind of dancing will be be doing?
Each hour-long class will follow a simple structure of a gentle warm up, teacher-led routines, and a cool down. With a mixture of retro, modern and contemporary music, there should hopefully be a little something for everyone. Expect dance styles covered to include Latin dance and salsa, musical theatre, street, commercial, and even a little bit of line dancing!
What if I can't keep up?
You should perform the movements in the class at a pace which feels comfortable for you, and does not cause you severe pain or discomfort. If at any point during the class you feel unable to do something, please tell the teacher immediately and the movement can either be adapted for your body, or further advice can be given.
